Time Management Tips for Success in the KAPS Exam

Pharmacy is a very promising career in Australia, why?  Well, because pharmacists are well-compensated in terms of salaries and other benefits.  There is a work-life balance because of flexible working hours and a lot of opportunities for professional growth.

Pharmacists play a vital role in healthcare, it is not limited to just dispensing medication.    Various health-related functions are also performed by them like conducting Medication Management Reviews (MMRs), offering over-the-counter medications and advice, administering vaccinations, health screening services, creating customized medications by compounding, and collaborating with other healthcare providers.

How to become a pharmacist in Australia then?  Well, first and foremost you should pass the KAPS (Knowledge Assessment of Pharmaceutical Sciences) exam.  To prepare for the KAPS exam, your time management skills must be activated.  So, here are some tips to keep you organized and focused throughout your KAPS experience.

Set Measurable Goals

It is recommended that you break down your study plan into smaller, manageable topics to be able to attain realistic goals.  With this, your progress will be easily tracked.

Structure a Study Plan

Make a structured study plan and allocate more time to areas you feel are quite difficult to learn.  Set specific time for each specific topic but don’t forget to take short breaks to avoid burnout.  You should stick to your plan, the key here is consistency.

Digital Technology Advantage

For certain, technology would be of considerable help to your study process.  Use apps like Google Calendar or Microsoft To-Do to help you with your study sessions and reminders; likewise, tools like Anki or Quizlet flashcard apps are useful, and timer apps like Pomodoro can keep you focused.

Integrate Active Learning

Make your study process more engaging by periodically taking KAPS mock tests and seriously following its time limit.  Teach what you learn to a study partner or you can simply talk out loud to yourself.  Then, at the end of each study session, you can summarize everything you’ve learned for the day.  Breaking the monotony of just reading the topics will make learning more effective and limit burnout to occur.

Never Multitask

Multitasking may reduce your focus and productivity, so you really have to concentrate.  Make sure to avoid checking your phone or attending to other personal matters while implementing your study plan.  Also, refrain from skimming through other topics simultaneously.

Remember to Review Regularly

Set a time each week to review past topics.  Doing so will reinforce your learning, retain key concepts and information will remain fresh in your mind.

Flexibility At Hand

Be flexible and adjust your study methods in case something goes wrong that will have repercussions on your study plan.  Unexpected events or certain topics that may cost you more time to study are only some of the things that may distract you.  But don’t panic, simply adjust your schedules and move on, don’t be stuck.

Self-Care is a Must

No matter how busy you are, don’t neglect self-care.  Getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, eating well, and managing stress are just as important as your study plan.   Remember to stay in good shape as this is part of your exam preparation.

Yes, with time management, discipline, and consistency, your KAPS journey will become manageable after all.
